The land in central Massachusetts has been shaped by retreating glaciers millennia ago. Glacial sand-and-gravel ridges are the highlights of this activity. Geographically speaking, this region is part of the Connecticut Valley Lowland which is a long narrow piece of land extending on both sides of the Connecticut River from northern Massachusetts to southern Connecticut. The land rises on each side of the river in terraces and is considered the best farmland in Massachusetts. The Blackstone River also flows through Worcester County.
The highest point in the county is Mt. Wachusett which rises to 2006 feet offering majestic views of the surrounding country as far as New Hampshire and the Berkshires.
Worcester is bordered by Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Middlesex and Norfolk counties.
